The National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health Commissions Play The National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, contracted with AHT to cast and produce a play about the historic role of women in medicine to accompany their new exhibit "Changing the Face of Medicine." The play was cast and directed by AHT Producing Director Pamela Sommerfield and authored by Jerri James, a playwright from the Maryland area. Ms. Sommerfield was faced with a directing challenge in that 100 years of women’s struggle had to be depicted by four actors in just over forty-five minutes. With the use of hats, scarves and various stage properties, she was able to bring this highly choreographed play to life. Six performances were presented by AHT at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. Employees and family from NIH and children from local schools attended the performances. Audiences were thrilled by the dexterity of the performances and by the various roles that the four actors assumed, vividly telling the story of how women struggled to achieve recognition in the male dominated field of medicine. This play has attracted attention and is being offered to museums, universities and other medically related sites. If you know of any company or organization interested in sponsoring this new play, please contact Pamela Sommerfield at (215) 232-2690. Next article: New Jersey Education Association Home
