The American Historical Theatre
Presents
Martha, Abigail &
Dolley
The setting for this original play is the studio of the famous portrait painter
Gilbert Stuart. The audience joins Stuart as he is awaiting the arrival of the
first three presidents’ wives who are to sit for a portrait. As the arrive,
Martha Washington, Abigail Adams and Dolley Madison begin a lively discussion.
As they interact with Gilbert Stuart and each other, the dialogue is not only
humorous, insightful, and historically informative, but provides an entertaining
interlude. While we so often celebrate the "Founding Fathers", the
accomplishments and personalities of these "Founding Mothers" truly
prove the old saying that: "Behind every great man there is a woman."
